What is remote data recovery?
Remote data recovery™ (RDR) is a patented technology, allowing our engineers to perform a lab-quality data recovery right on your server, desktop or laptop through a modem or Internet connection. The only requirement is that the storage device is operational.
How does RDR work?
RDR consists of three main components:
- Communications Client – The user initiates a connection to an Ontrack RDR Server using the specially designed RDR QuickStart™ software. The RDR Client currently works with Microsoft Windows® versions 2000/2003/XP/Vista/7/2008.
- RDR Server – Locations around the world to facilitate connections.
- RDR Workstation – Used by Kroll Ontrack engineers to recover your valuable data.

How is the data actually recovered for me?
Your recovered data is restored to your system or copied to a new destination and is accessible immediately upon completion of the recovery.
I am worried about the security of the data on my network; how does Kroll Ontrack handle the security of my data in RDR?
Your data’s security is assured thanks to the Kroll Ontrack proprietary communication protocol, encrypted packets and secure facilities.
Does it take a long time to establish the connection to RDR?
No. Many customers get connected in less than ten minutes. Once connected, the RDR engineer takes over, freeing the customer to work on other projects.
Can I use RDR if I have a proxy server or firewall?
Yes.
The drive does not show up in Windows; how can you recover it remotely?
In the majority of cases, we can access a drive that is not showing up in Windows Explorer® because we access the drive at a sector level rather than at an OS level. Partition or structure problems can cause a drive not to show up in Windows Explorer, even though it is available to us at a sector level.
What types of systems and media can you recover with RDR?
RDR technology works for all types of recoveries on all types of systems where your hardware is functioning normally (not failing or damaged).
What are the advantages to using RDR?
There are many advantages to using RDR, including:
- Accessible 24 hours a day/seven days a week from anywhere in the world with the ability to recover data in as little as one hour.
- Elimination of shipping time makes RDR the fastest, most convenient and cost-effective solution available.
- Your data's security is assured. The Kroll Ontrack security features help protect systems and data throughout the entire recovery process.
- Ensures the best possible results and the highest quality recovery in an efficient and convenient manner.
