Kroll Ontrack has seen multiple examples of customers that come to us because their cloud providers have turned them away in data loss situations.

'The Cloud' has become synonymous with almost any service/server that is no longer maintained on-premises in your organisation. The advantages of cloud solutions are many - reduced infrastructure costs, ease of growth and providing a consistent experience for local and remote users. But none of these factors make the cloud exempt from data loss.

Data loss in the cloud is usually the result of a human error - data stores or volumes are accidentally deleted; database tables are dropped or virtual systems are moved/deleted. Furthermore, cloud data storage is still susceptible to viruses, hacking and other security issues and at the end of the day, cloud computing doesn't mean that the underlying engine is exempt from failure.

Regardless of the cause, if you have experienced any form of data loss in the cloud then contact Kroll Ontrack today for a free data recovery consultation and quote.

All Platforms, All Data Loss Situations and All Data Recovery Solutions

It's clear that cloud computing is quickly gaining ground among organisations looking to streamline their technology infrastructure and cut information technology costs. Cloud Computing has become increasingly popular n recent years, especially since many IT experts hold the opinion that storing information in the cloud is the future of managing and processing large amounts of data. However, not all clouds are 'created equal' and occasionally data loss does occur.

Kroll Ontrack has the experience and propriety technology required to recover your data from cloud services. We have recovered data for customers with cloud service platforms at every level - from small development project cloud users to secondary infrastructure deployments, and even nationwide smartphone data servers supporting millions of mobile phone users.

This table shows some current cloud services, common data loss scenarios and Ontrack Data Recovery Solutions - if you can't find what you're looking for, contact us today on +65 6296 5131 for a free consultation with one of our data recovery professionals.

Data Recovery Solution

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)
  • Logical volume overwrite
  • Overwritten data files
  • Deleted files
  • Deleted partition or deleted logical volume
  • Accidental volume reformat
  • Snapshot management corruption
IaaS uses virtualisation technology to provide this service. The Remote Data Recovery service is the best solution for IaaS cloud platform due to speed and ease.
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
  • Dropped database
  • Dropped tables
  • Deleted row data
  • System table corruption
  • Corrupt database file
Kroll Ontrack uses proprietary recovery applications to find and repair specific file data types. Remote Data Recovery service is the fastest way to retrieve your data. Access to your SaaS database file will be required.
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
  • Deleted partition or deleted logical volume
  • Accidental volume reformat
  • Snapshot management corruption
PaaS system risks are data loss to the storage volumes that make up the platform you are using. The Remote Data Recovery service is the fastest way to retrieve your data.
Cloud Storage
  • Logical volume overwrite
  • Overwritten data files
  • Deleted files
  • Deleted partition or deleted logical volume
  • Accidental volume reformat
  • Snapshot management corruption
Kroll Ontrack has recovered data from many cloud storage providers whose clients did not have any backup redundancy. When Kroll Ontrack is contacted immediately, nearly 100% of the requested files are recovered.

Cloud Data Recovery Process

The recovery process for data in the cloud is a three-stage process. A successful recovery of cloud data requires remote access through your administrator account and verification of the storage device or system and the file system that contains the requested data.

Data Recovery Process

Description

Stage 1Target LUN (SAN or NAS), iSCSI*LUN, or virtual disk is identified.
Stage 2Remote recovery services client is installed on virtual or physical computer with target LUN, iSCSI LUN, or virtual disk file access. In the case of virtual disk files, there may need to be extra storage available for data extraction; enough for the recovered data.
Stage 3Volume file system indices are checked for meta-data-to-data stream integrity. In the case of SaaS database recoveries, the database file will need to be accessible from the remote services client computer. Local access to the database file is recommended for speed.
Stage 4Listings of all recoverable files are completed. A database listing of all recoverable tables and rows is completed.

*iSCSI LUNs are reliant upon the SAN's internal file system to manage the data. Data loss within this type of logical storage may require access to the SAN's volume where the iSCSI files are stored. **Targe volumes that reside within virtual disk files are dependent upon the hypervisor's datastore file system to manage the data. Data loss at the hypervisor volume level or within the guest's virtual disk file may require additional engineering effort to complete the evaluation.
